Contemporary Persian poet Simin Behbahani received this year's Janus Pannonius Award in the southern Hungarian city of Pecs on Thursday.
The prize set up by Hungarian PEN Club chair Geza Szocs last year comes with a cash purse of 50,000 euros. It recognises poets whose life work has contributed to promoting dialogue between nations and cultures.
Szucs said at the awards ceremony that Behbahani has brought a renewal of classic Persian literature and on top of that she gained worldwide fame for her consistent moral stance and bravery.
Behbahani (86) was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1999 and 2002.
